December 14, 2011: Erica Wilson Inspired My Crewel World
Erica Wilson passed away yesterday at the age of 83. She was an extraordinary teacher, author and designer of crewel embroidery and a force behind its presence in the United States. I never met Ms. Wilson, but consulted with her by phone for my first book, The New Crewel. She was generous in her comments, making corrections and offering a few tips. For example, I have always followed her instructions for Satin Stitch, which requires outlining your design first with Split Stitch. (For those of us who do crewel embroidery, this makes all the difference!) She gave me her stamp of approval before we went to print for which I was grateful. My second book, New Crewel: The Motif Collection, goes to print this week and this morning I spoke with the publisher and was able to dedicate it to her. I learned so much from her books, especially from Crewel Embroidery, 1962, which I continue reference often. Her impact on the art of crewel embroidery is immeasurable. She will be missed! February 1, 2010: "Cool Crewel" Linen Skirt in Sew News

Check out my lastest creation in the Feb/March issue of Sew News. It's a simple, linen, wrap-a-round skirt with a poppy, floral pattern along the lower edge. Perfect for Spring. You can pick up a copy of the magazine, their 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition, at your local bookstore, or buy it online here. And, Wool & Hoop sells everything you'll need to make the skirt: The linen fabric, crewel wool thread, needles and a hoop. Click here to see it all. You can follow the white on turquoise design as she did, or choose from our 18 shades of linen and 421 shades of crewel thread to make it your own. The only thing you'll need is a pattern for the skirt -- an easy find at your local fabric store. Have fun!

December 29, 2009: Craft Night was Fun!

We had embroidery, origami, reverse applique, mending and felting. I worked on a tea cosey inspired from here and a set of limited edition posters for a concert/screening that Ballroom Marfa and Marfa Public Radio are presenting on Jan. 2 at the Crowley Theatre in Marfa. Each poster is hand-stitched and will be for sale with proceeds going to the Ballroom. Also today, a recent visitor to Wool & Hoop, Jill Sones, blogged about us here.
