CONTRA/BARN DANCE AND POTLUCK
FREEClap your hands and do-si-do! All ages and experience levels are welcome to dance to live music with this American folk-dance group that meets once a month in a smoke- and alcohol-free environment. You don’t need a partner, just take yourself and some food to contribute to the potluck dinner before the dance begins. Lightweight, comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended.

IRVING CHAUTAUQUA SERIES: CHINESE FOLK DANCE
FREE! Jin L. Liu of Richardson and Happy Feet Dance School and Performance of Plano will present a traditional Chinese folk dance demonstration. It’s part of a continuing cultural series for all ages that takes place on the second Saturday of each month at the Irving Central Library.

ORVIS FLY FISHING CLINICS
FREE! Through July, Orvis is offering two-part weekend fly-fishing lessons at participating retail stores and dealers. Sign up for Fly Fishing 101 to learn the basics of casting and outfit rigging, and then go back for Fly Fishing 201 for a water outing to practice your skills and hopefully catch a fish.

NEW CREWEL EMBROIDERY 101 WORKSHOP AT OIL AND COTTON
Both beginners and advanced embroiderers will benefit from this class led by Katherine Shaughnessy, a visiting artist from Marfa, who will offer instruction in crewel embroidery basics and essential “new crewel” stitches. She’ll also include some history and explanations of materials, finishing techniques and pattern-transfer tricks. Her unique crewel works, wool and hoop kits, and autographed copies of her books, including her latest, New Crewel: The Motif Collection, will be for sale.

RODEO CAMP 101
The African American Museum teaches attendees how rodeo competitors train with mechanical bull riding, calf- and steer-roping classes, and more. The family-friendly Rodeo Camp 101 event on June 9 is leading up to the Texas Black Invitational Rodeo on June 16.
